YVES GALJĒ

My work focuses on documentary photography, portraying people and their environments. The human presence is central, even when not physically visible.

My photographic eye was shaped in my parents' hair salon, where I spent decades behind the chair. Listening to thousands of stories, I learned how people reveal themselves and how they hide. This experience fuels my desire to look past the façade and capture a deeper truth.

I am drawn to the ordinary person, the "common mortals" often overlooked on the street. In their everyday habits, I find extraordinary stories of hope, belief, and love—themes recognized from the salon's conversations. My subjects do not pose; they are still, often reflective, and serene. The true emotion emerges not upon the first glance, but when you take the time to look longer.

My images are never fleeting. They are made with the same detailed eye and patient hand as a careful haircut. Slowness and attention are the foundation of my practice. I work with medium and large format cameras, often analog, emphasizing a creamy sharpness that highlights my gentle approach to the subject.

I search for authenticity, a certain folk sensibility, and nostalgia. What appears to be an everyday event often reveals a deeper layer, a hidden story. By magnifying the subtleties of life, I connect seemingly disparate images to reveal a larger, cohesive narrative—whether documenting the gentrification of Amsterdam Noord or capturing the complex soul of the USA.
